How I Prepared to Travel to Thailand with Food Allergies

Traveling to Greece with Food Allergies

Sitting at the top of a mountain in the tiny village of Zia with a glass of Prosecco in hand, I watched as the rainbow sky extinguished the ball of smoldering fire below the horizon. Earlier that morning I’d watched that same fire ball rise over the sea, stream light […]

ORDERING THE SAFEST CHOICE ON THE MENU • The safest option may seem like the boring option, but with food allergies, it is the best option. Something that I discuss in my course is choosing the safest meal on the menu. Especially when dining somewhere new to you or somewhere away from home, choosing what seems like the safest choice makes the most sense. ⁣ ⁣ This means a dish that is: ⁣ - Typically safe for your allergens⁣ - Made with fewer ingredients ⁣ ⁣ When you order, still explain your food allergies and ask about the ingredients in the dish and cross contact. Never assume it is the safest, but choose what you think should be to ask about. For example, this salad may not have been my safest option if they had nuts in the same area where they were preparing my salad, however that was not the case and was my safest choice at a cafe in Vienna over the holidays.⁣ ⁣ What are your safest “go to” dishes when dining out? Share below! ⁣ ⁣ #foodallergy #foodallergies #foodallergykid #foodallergyfamily #foodallergylife #foodallergymom #foodallergyfriendly #foodallergyawareness #anaphylaxis #allergyadult #peanutallergy #peanutallergymom #treenutallergy #EmpowerFAkids #educator #restaurants #chefs #allergytravels #travelblogger #allergyblogger #travelwithfoodallergies #travels #travelingwithfoodallergies #foodallergytravel⁣ #diningout

THIS PLATE SHAPE HAS A PURPOSE• When I was in Boston in the fall, we went out for brunch at a restaurant downtown. It was basically the only one open on a weekday for brunch near our hotel, so we decided to check it out. Based on some factors that I teach about in my course, I wasn’t sure how successful I would be eating there. It turned out that although I was very limited in what I could order, they had a food allergy protocol in place and took allergies seriously. ⁣ ⁣ SO, what was the plate shape all about?? As you can see in the photo, the plate under my eggs and bacon is square. You may also notice that the plate across the table is round. One of the procedures this restaurant puts in place is using a square plate to differentiate between a food allergy dish and a regular dish. This way, there is less confusion for everyone, from kitchen to server. ⁣ ⁣ Have you been to a restaurant with a clear protocol in place for food allergies? What did they do? Share below! ⁣ ⁣ #foodallergy #foodallergies #foodallergykid #foodallergyfamily #foodallergylife #foodallergymom #foodallergyfriendly #foodallergyawareness #anaphylaxis #allergyadult #peanutallergy #peanutallergymom #treenutallergy #EmpowerFAkids #educator #foodallergyconsulting #foodallergycoaching #allergytravels #travelblogger #allergyblogger #travelwithfoodallergies #travelingwithfoodallergies #foodallergytravel⁣ #diningout

COURSE TESTIMONIAL • I’m excited to share a testimonial I received from a parent of a child with food allergies who completed my “How to Dine Out With Food Allergies” course. Sarah said, “Thank you for offering this course. I have a 6 year old daughter with multiple food allergies and dining out is a very scary concept. However, I don't want to raise her to be afraid; rather, I want to teach her to explore and to be adventurous, while also taking her food allergies seriously. Your course accomplishes just that. I'm more confident about dining out with her, and I'm better equipped to start teaching her how to speak up and manage her allergies as she gets older. There's never going to be a risk-free dining experience, but you provide practical tools to mitigate that risk. I'm looking forward to sharing what I've learned with my daughter.” ⁣ ⁣ I know that many of you can relate to Sarah and want to make changes going into the new year. To enroll in my course and feel empowered to dine out as safely as possible with food allergies, visit the link in my bio. ⁣ ⁣ Do you have any questions about the course? FRIENDSGIVING WITH FOOD ALLERGIES • Over the years I've had a lot of experience with handling social events with food allergies. This past weekend I was at a Friendsgiving with new friends. It was a small group of us and everyone brought a dish. Some of the dishes I made, some of the dishes I oversaw the preparation of, and some of the dishes were made and brought with minimal knowledge of my food allergies. I never expect safe food at social gatherings, but I am always grateful for any effort that is given to trying to make food safe. A lot of effort was made this weekend and I truly appreciated it! ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ So, what did I eat? The dishes I made were completely allergy-safe. The dishes I oversaw the process of were also safe and I felt 100% comfortable eating. The ones that were brought and I did not oversee, I did not eat. Although one was likely safe for me, I would not risk the possibility of cross contact or a missed ingredient on a label. If I don’t know, I don’t eat. That has always been the rule since I was a child and one I continue as an adult. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ I know it can feel uncomfortable to not eat a dish that someone else makes, especially when they are trying to be aware of your food allergies. When that happens: I say how much I appreciate the effort and that it looks delicious, but that I don’t eat anything I am not totally sure about. Usually, people completely understand, especially because they don’t want to potentially cause a reaction. Sometimes people don’t understand and that is when you need to kindly stand your ground and trust yourself. ⁣⁣ ⁣ As I prepare to go home to my parents for Thanksgiving, I know that my family is already taking photos of labels and saving ingredients for me to read. I have a blog post that I will link in my IG stories with four strategies to navigate Thanksgiving. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ How do you handle social gatherings this time of year? Share below! ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ #foodallergy #foodallergies #foodallergykid #foodallergyfamily #foodallergylife #foodallergymom #foodallergyfriendly #foodallergyawareness #anaphylaxis #allergyadult #peanutallergy #peanutallergymom #treenutallergy #EmpowerFAkids #allergytravels #allergyblogger

Although the course is written for a more teen through adult audience, it is also totally appropriate to take along with your child. ⁣ ⁣ If you are looking for an effective way to dine out as safely as possible, then this course is for you. Also, I have a special offer for my followers, since many of you have been following my adventures for years, I want to say THANK YOU with a coupon code for $15 OFF the course (using code: 15OFF). The coupon is only good for the first 20 people who enroll, so be quick! ⁣ ⁣ Visit the link in my bio to enroll in the course today! ⁣ ⁣ #foodallergy #foodallergies #foodallergykid #foodallergyfamily #foodallergylife #foodallergymom #foodallergyfriendly #foodallergyawareness #anaphylaxis #allergyadult #peanutallergy #peanutallergymom #treenutallergy #educator #allergyblogger #travelingwithfoodallergies

FALL ROAD TRIP & COURSE UPDATE • I’m on a New England road trip to see the foliage and it’s off to a pretty magical beginning. The first stop was at a Bed & Breakfast in the Hudson Valley in New York. We went out for dinner then returned to an evening around the fire pit. For breakfast, we had pumpkin waffles and a spinach and feta frittata. I will be writing a blog post about this trip when I return with all of the details! ⁣ ⁣ Now, for a quick course update: I have a few technical things to work out, so it will be going live next week. Stay tuned and subscribe on my site (MissAllergicReactor.com) to be the first to know when it’s up! Thanks so much for all of the excitement and support around it! Enjoy the weekend and follow my IG Stories for some road trip updates. ⁣ #foodallergy #foodallergies #foodallergykid #foodallergyfamily #foodallergylife #foodallergymom #foodallergyfriendly #foodallergyawareness #allergyadult #peanutallergy #restaurants #chefs #allergytravels #travelblogger #allergyblogger #bedandbreakfast #travelwithfoodallergies #travels #travelingwithfoodallergies #foodallergytravel⁣ #foodallergytraveler #newenglandtravel #roadtrip

WHAT WOULD I TELL MY YOUNGER SELF ABOUT DINING OUT WITH FOOD ALLERGIES? • I’ve done a lot of reflecting on my dining out journey lately as I’ve been finishing up my online course. My younger self was worried about bothering people and standing apart from whomever I was with. I still spoke up, asked questions and advocated but it was hard. I know this is something that many can relate to. It’s not easy to always have to ask what’s in food, decide if you can trust the response, and then try to enjoy the meal. Conversations at the table can often turn into an entire allergy discussion, not because you want it to, but because people are curious or are trying to relate or understand. ⁣ ⁣ I went through periods of time where dining out felt like so much work; exhausting, frustrating and embarrassing. I wish my younger self knew I would get to a point where I didn’t feel uncomfortable or like a burden to others. ⁣ ⁣ So, how did I get to a place where I feel confident and capable dining out with food allergies? More time, more practice, and fine-tuning strategies and tools are how I got to this place. In my self-paced online course launching later this week, I share the strategies and tools that took me years to master. I can’t wait to continue to help others dine out as safely as possible and remove the discomfort and worry that is often felt when dining out with food allergies. ⁣ ⁣ If you want to be the first to hear about when my course launches, make sure to subscribe on my website if you haven’t before! ⁣ ⁣ #foodallergy #foodallergies #foodallergykid #foodallergyfamily #foodallergylife #foodallergymom #foodallergyfriendly #foodallergyawareness #anaphylaxis #allergyadult #peanutallergy #peanutallergymom #treenutallergy #EmpowerFAkids #teacher #educator #restaurants #chefs #allergytravels #travelblogger #allergyblogger #travelwithfoodallergies #travels #travelingwithfoodallergies #foodallergytravel⁣ #foodallergytraveler⁣

FRIEND APPRECIATION POST • One of my really good friends, Julia, and I met on Craigslist. I know that sounds unlikely but we were both teachers looking for a roommate in the same city and that is how we connected. We hit it off immediately and even though the apartment itself wasn’t anything amazing, Julia was, and that made it 100 worth it! ⁣ ⁣ The day I went to meet Julia and see the apartment, my mom happened to be with me. We went to get a coffee after and meet up with a friend nearby. Julia came to meet us at the coffee shop with the lease. She said she was happy to keep the apartment nut free (my most severe reactions have always been to nuts). It was something I had never asked of any of my roommates and here she was just offering it like it was no big deal. My mom was totally blown away by her thoughtfulness (I think that is basically a food allergy mom’s dream come true, right?!) I felt very grateful to have found such a caring new roommate who would be become a great friend! ⁣ ⁣ This summer, Julia got married to a wonderful guy, Ben, and I was honored to be a part of the festivities, from bachelorette weekend to bridal shower and of course the wedding and after party. A few months before, Julia asked me to email her my chef card to check with the caterer for the wedding. I was also able to safely eat at all of the rest of the celebrations, including safe snacks for the bachelorette and after party, as well as safely eating at the bridal shower, including dessert! It was a beautiful weekend of celebrations and I didn’t have to worry about if I would be able to eat. ⁣ ⁣ I feel truly lucky to have such great friends like Julia, who make my food allergies just a part of the process; never making it feel like an additional burden. Everyone with food allergies deserves to find friends that make them feel this way, too! ⁣ ⁣ #ttot #foodallergy #foodallergies #foodallergyfamily #foodallergymom #allergyadult #travelingwithfoodallergies #foodallergytravel⁣ #foodallergykid #foodallergyteen #nutallergy #friends #wedding #allergyblogger #foodallergyblogger #EmpowerFAkids #foodallergylife

FRIEND APPRECIATION POST • One of my really good friends, Julia, and I met on Craigslist. I know that sounds unlikely but we were both teachers looking for a roommate in the same city and that is how we connected. BRUNCH • This weekend I tried a new brunch spot. I love a good weekend brunch, and this place had fabulous food and they were wonderful about my food allergies. I followed all of the steps I make before I dine out. Once I arrive at the restaurant I have steps I also follow. These steps are all intuitive at this point in my life. I don’t think about them. I’m not embarrassed by them. I just do them automatically. I’m present and aware, but I’m not anxious or stressed. I am happy. Trying new restaurants is exciting and fun for me!⁣ ⁣ As I’ve been busy working to finish up my online course on “How to Dine Out with Food Allergies,” (stay tuned for details on the launch date later this week) I’ve been reminded of many moments before I ever felt this way about dining out. Most of the people I’ve met over the years while working in the food allergy community do not feel this way. I actually don’t think I’ve met anyone in person that loves dining out like I do, but that’s okay! You DO NOT need to love it. It IS important that you learn how to feel comfortable doing it. I will be teaching and modeling all of my steps, strategies, and tools in my course and I can’t wait to help others get to a place where they feel confident with the strategies and tools to dine out safely. ⁣ ⁣ How do you feel before dining out with food allergies right now? How do you want to feel? ⁣ ⁣ P.S. I will be updating some new Philly spots on my site, including this new brunch fave! :) ⁣ ⁣ #foodallergy #foodallergies #foodallergykid #foodallergyfamily #foodallergylife #foodallergymom #foodallergyfriendly #foodallergyawareness #anaphylaxis #allergyadult #peanutallergy #peanutallergymom #treenutallergy #EmpowerFAkids #teacher #educator #restaurants #chefs #allergytravels #travelblogger #allergyblogger #travelwithfoodallergies #travels #travelingwithfoodallergies #foodallergytravel⁣ #foodallergytraveler #brunch

WHAT ARE THE EASIEST MEALS TO ORDER WHEN DINING OUT WITH FOOD ALLERGIES? • This answer will be different for everyone because it depends on what allergens you are avoiding. However, what is the same for all of us is that we should have a few ‘go-to’ meal ideas in mind that are easy and safe options for when we dine out. ⁣ For me, this often looks like grilled chicken and vegetables, a caprese salad, or simple pasta dish. It could also be pizza or a burger (usually) without the bun. These are meals that are often safe or can be made safely for me. I always aim to try different dishes when I can, but having some easy ‘go-to’ options is helpful when I can’t as easily choose something else. ⁣ ⁣ I’ve had a lot of interest and questions about my “Dining Out with Food Allergies” course. It will be live the beginning of next month! I’m really looking forward to sharing more details with you soon. ⁣ ⁣ What are your ‘go to’ meals when dining out? MY FOOD ALLERGIES DON’T PREVENT ME FROM ENJOYING DINING OUT • For most of us with severe food allergies, I don’t think this is often the feeling. However, I can honestly say that I truly enjoy it. I even look forward to it. Trust me, I have NOT always felt this way. I’ve been through periods of time where I found it way more EXHAUSTING to dine out than it was worth. I found that eating my own food was easier and that I rather do that. This was BEFORE I started consistently using strategies that helped make the process much easier. Not everyone needs to love dining out. But, everyone deserves to have the opportunity to feel like they can safely enjoy a meal out. ⁣ ⁣ I help you to sharpen the strategies you need to feel confident dining out in my “Dining Out with Food Allergies” course. Even if my dining out enthusiasm doesn’t rub off, you will still learn how to do it as safely and confidently as possible. Food is a significant part of our culture, celebrations, and socialization. Learning how to navigate it with food allergies is an essential life skill and taking away the exhaustion is one of the first steps to enjoyment.⁣ ⁣ How do you feel about dining out with food allergies? BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS AT RESTAURANTS • I went out to brunch with a friend this weekend. I had only been back to the restaurant once since the pandemic, but Jared recognized me immediately as I started to explain my allergies and pulled out my chef card. He remembered not only my card but my name, since it is the same as his sister (who also spells it like me). He immediately put any food allergy concerns to ease as he looked at my card and brought it inside to double check ingredients and the potential for cross contact. I had a relaxing visit and delicious brunch without any concerns. ⁣ ⁣ In my “Dining Out with Food Allergies” course, I share how I form these relationships and the strategies I use to feel comfortable as I guide you to feel ready to dine out as safely as possible. With my Masters in Education, I’ve been teaching for over a decade, as well as living with severe food allergies my entire life. I’m excited to combine my food allergy lifestyle expertise along with my teaching expertise to bring you the help you’ve been asking me for. ⁣ ⁣ Stay tuned each day this week for more information about this self-paced course launching soon! Questions or anything that you hope will be included - leave in the comments below. ⁣ ⁣ #foodallergy #foodallergies #travelingwithfoodallergies #foodallergytravel #allergyblogger #foodallergykid #foodallergyfamily #foodallergylife #foodallergymom #foodallergyfriendly #nutfree #foodallergyawareness #anaphylaxis⁣ #allergyadult #peanutallergy #peanutallergymom #treenutallergy #mondaymotivation⁣
